Visiting George Washington's Mount Vernon on the 4th of July

The summer before we had Michael, we decided to do something different for 4th of July.  It had been many years since my mom and I had gone to Mount Vernon and Jon had never been.  What's a better way to celebrate the birth of our great nation than by visiting one of our Founding Father and 1st Commander in Chief's home, George Washington?

All of the special 4th of July events are included in your admission to the estate, even cake!  To learn more about what Mount Vernon has to offer, you can go to the Mount Vernon website.

While we stood in line to go into the house, we saw several people dressed in period clothing.

Throughout the day, there were military re-enactments that included cannon fire and drums drumming.

While we were on our house tour, daytime fireworks were set off over the Potomac River.  I've never seen fireworks during the day and it was spectacular.

We got to meet General and Mrs. George Washington on the porch of their house.

Afterwards, we hiked it down to the Potomac to get on a boat tour.  A spectacular view of Mount Vernon on the Potomac River.

I'm sure that we'll go back in a few years so that Michael can learn about history.  Maybe we'll even go on 4th of July since it's a completely different experience.  So, if you're looking for something to do this 4th of July and live near Northern Virginia, Mount Vernon is the perfect place to go to.
