Have you heard of bookroo?
Product Review and a Special Offer for You!
Seems that the new big thing are monthly subscriptions that come to your door in a box. Every time I'm on Facebook, there seems to be some new box subscription that's recommended to me. If you're like me, you want to make sure that it's really worth that monthly payment. I'm excited to say, that Bookroo really is worth it!
It's no wonder you've probably never heard of them, they just started earlier this year. The Bookroo crew, as they call themselves, are three brothers and their wives (One of the first things that made me like this company, family owned and operated here in the United States.) who realized that there were no real dedicated monthly book subscriptions for babies/kids and so Bookroo was born.

When Jane contacted me about doing a product review (I received a discount on this Bookroo box in exchange for writing this review. All opinions about the company, service, and books are mine.), I was extremely interested and automatically went to their website to start the research and ordering process. I loved all the art work and found their website very easy to find the answers that I was looking for. I also love that they have their own Bookroo Blog! A great way for people to learn more about these awesome entrepreneurs.
When you go to their website, you'll want to scroll down until you see two buttons. One is to start a subscription and the other is to give a gift. Yes, there's even an option to give a gift! Bookroo is all about helping grow a child's library so, giving a Bookroo subscription is a great way to do just that. Back to getting your subscription started - currently there are two different book types: board books or picture books. Because Michael is 4, I chose the picture books.
Once you've decided on which type of books, you then have the choice of how to pay for your subscription. You can either do month to month, 3 months prepaid and will renew after the third month, or 6 months prepaid and will renew after the sixth month. When your package has been shipped, you'll receive an email letting you know it's on its way.
I told you how this is a family owned and run company, right? So, it's no surprise that they personally package up all the books for every single box that's sent out that month! Each box has the Bookroo logo on the back, is made from recycled packaging, and can then again be recycled.
Michael was so excited when I told him that the box was something for him. Like it was his birthday all over again.
Yep, the books are individually wrapped! Saves you time wrapping if you've decided to give this subscription as a gift. So, not only do they package every box up, they also wrapped every single book that's being sent out. What company would do that? One that cares about the quality and experience for the customer, that's who!
Michael's turned out to be a pro at unwrapping gifts!
He was actually pretty excited about getting the books. It's just been within the past year that he's really started to love being read a bedtime story. I thank his preschool for this because before he wouldn't want to be read a book at all.
I also loved that there was a personal message on the inside of our box. Again, what company would do that?
That night, Michael picked one of his new books for his bedtime story. He loved it! Thanks, Bookroo - you have one happy little customer!
Did you know that research actually goes into picking out the best books to put in these boxes? Yes, when they place their order for the books they're sending out the next month, they order several different books to research for the next round of books. They all read them and even get second opinions before making their final decision. Another added benefit, they make sure the books are going to be educational and enjoyable for the kids and parents.
So, you're probably wondering - "Lucy, it seems great, but is it really worth the money for two books?" I was actually wondering the very same thing as I waited for my box. I decided that once the box came in, I would do some comparison shopping to really see (I'm a numbers type of person). I mean, the books are not cheap books at all. The picture books are hard back which are less likely to be destroyed as quickly as a paper back.
The day after we received our box, Michael and I hopped in the car and drove the 20 miles down the road to the closest Barnes and Noble. I decided to drive the longer distance because the two bookstores nearby are fairly small and probably wouldn't have these books. After fighting the traffic to get down to our two story Barnes and Noble, I was unable to find these two books. I was, however, able to find them online.
The first book that Michael opened was Dream Away by Julia Durango & Katie Belle Trupiano and illustrated by Robert Goldstrom. On this book, it said that the retail price for it was $16.99. Here's what I was able to find online since our local stores did not carry it:
barnesandnoble.com $14.44
amazon.com $11.43
The second book was The Bear Who Shared by Catherine Rayner. If I'm reading the back of the book correctly, the retail price for this book was $16.99. Here's what I found online:
barnesandnoble.com $13.41
amazon.com $11.43
So, if you ordered from Barnes and Noble the total before any shipping and tax would be $27.85. The total before shipping and tax if ordered through Amazon, would be $22.86.
Now, you're probably wondering - "What happens if they send us books we already have since we don't get to choose?" They've got you covered! If that happens, take a picture of you giving it to another child that doesn't have it and send the picture to Bookroo. They will then give you a $5.00 credit towards your next box!
I know, you're probably thinking - "Lucy, you said that there's a special offer for me. What is it?" Here it is - Bookroo is giving all my readers $4.00 off their first subscription! All you have to do is go to www.bookroo.com and the $4.00 will be automatically taken off at checkout (you must click on the link to receive the $4.00 off). Don't forget to take pictures of your little ones opening up their boxes and share them on social media with #mybookroobox.
Want to get your kids excited about their box? How about printing out this coloring page of Boo that Jane posted on their blog.
