Josie's

restaurant review of Josie's in Lexington KY,

Review guidelines:

1 Fork = I would rather eat dog food.
2 Forks = I would eat there if I was starving.
3 Forks = Not bad; someplace I would occasionally consider eating.
4 Forks = A good place to eat; I will put it into my rotation of places I dine frequently.
5 Forks = One of my all time favorites!

One caveat to note – I am allergic to fish and seafood, so if you are looking for those recommendations, you will have to consult someone else.

Because I have a daughter-in-law with Celiac and a really good friend who is Vegetarian, I will try to point out whether those options are present when I review a restaurant.

restaurant review of Josie's in Lexington KY,

The occasion was a solo lunch.  Josie’s is perfect for just such a situation, because, in addition to their dining room, they have a lunch counter where individuals can get waited on pronto during the peak hours.  Josie’s is a relative newcomer on the independent Lexington scene and is owned by the Murray family – longtime restaurateurs and owners of the fabulous Merrick Inn.  They have a wide variety of menu offerings including: all-day breakfast, burgers, sandwiches, quiche, soups, salads, and quesadillas.  There are always 3-4 daily specials.  Everything is very fresh and imaginative, using local ingredients.  On this occasion, I ordered the pancakes.  Now, you might ask – why pancakes?  Josie’s are great!  Let me explain – I am a pancake snob.  No thick, rubbery, crispy, dark brown pancakes for moi….I want pancakes just like my mom used to make on our gas stove griddle – light, fluffy, a certain shade of golden brown.  The only way Josie’s could improve upon theirs would be to offer real maple syrup, not the corn syrup variety.  Anytime I want breakfast for lunch during the week, Josie’s is the place.  I have eaten there many times and can also vouch for the burgers, quesadillas, quiche, and soups.  They usually offer some unique twist to otherwise mundane food.  Service is always fast and friendly, but be advised – go early!  Josie’s is always packed at lunch, as well as Saturday mornings.  My pancake lunch was $10.96 including tax and tip.

Josie’s recently opened a 2nd location in the old Murray’s Restaurant on US 68:

3955 Harrodsburg Rd.
Lexington, KY
(859) 523-6833

I have never tried Josie’s for dinner.  Until they opened the US 68 location, Josie’s in Chevy Chase was not open at night.  However, both locations now seem to have a large and interesting dinner menu - perhaps a trip is in the near future for Chip and I.

Note – both locations are now closed on Sunday – a disappointment to be sure.  Josie’s on 68 was reported to previously offer a fantastic Sunday brunch buffet. :(

Gluten Free Options – none advertised, but there appear to be several choices that would work.

Vegetarian Options – none advertised, but there appear to be even more choices that would work.
