Review guidelines:

1 Fork = I would rather eat dog food.
2 Forks = I would eat there if I was starving.
3 Forks = Not bad; someplace I would occasionally consider eating.
4 Forks = A good place to eat; I will put it into my rotation of places I dine frequently.
5 Forks = One of my all time favorites!

One caveat to note – I am allergic to fish and seafood, so if you are looking for those recommendations, you will have to consult someone else.

Because I have a daughter-in-law with Celiac and a really good friend who is Vegetarian, I will try to point out whether those options are present when I review a restaurant.

The occasion was dinner with my husband after a matinee performance of The Addams Family at the Lexington Opera House.  This was our first visit to Shakespeare and Co.  Given the Victorian décor, I was expecting the restaurant to be dimly lit and very dark, but it wasn’t.  The Victorian décor was mainly whites and lots of pastels.  The restaurant was large and brightly lit with great views of downtown from the large windows.  Their menu is made to resemble a theater playbill.  The menu selections were quite extensive.  We arrived at the restaurant before the main rush of the theater crowd.  The first 20-25 minutes were a complete service snafu.  It took about 10 minutes before anyone greeted us.  When the server came back with our beverages, I had a question about the menu which she couldn’t answer.  She went to find out and never came back!!  10 more minutes passed and a different server came to take our order.  I asked where the first server went, and was told “she had too many tables.”  I proceeded to ask my question again – “What kind of ham is in the ham and cheese crepe?”  The second server didn’t know either.  I gave up and ordered the American breakfast plate.  There were several other choices that appealed to me and I couldn’t make up my mind.  In addition to sweet and savory crepes, the Shakespeare & Co menu includes salads, pizzas, sandwiches and burgers, several soups, appetizers, Mediterranean flatbreads, pasta, a large variety of entrees, desserts, and a decent selection of breakfast plates- - something for everyone!  They also offer a variety of hot teas and coffees.

My husband ordered an ala carte chicken soup and a grilled chicken entrée with some sort of creamy mushroom sauce, mashed potatoes and greens.

My breakfast plate was great – hearty and filling; it consisted of at least 3 eggs, both bacon and sausage links (I didn’t eat the sausage), a hash brown patty, cheese grits, whole grain toast, juice, and hot tea.  It’s hard to go wrong with breakfast and this one did not disappoint.  The portion was large and the attention to detail was great – whipped butter in a little basket with the toast, tiny little single serving jars of jellies and jams, real cream for the tea.  Since breakfast is not all that exciting for some readers, I also tasted a few bites of my husband’s food.  The chicken soup was unbelievable!  They served it in a bowl that could double as a bathtub.  Enough for two people to share, it contained small bits of chicken, shredded carrots, homemade broth, corn, and skinny, curly noodles similar to ramen noodles.  The soup was delicious.  The serving of mashed potatoes with my husband’s chicken entrée was quite large and unusual.  They tasted great, but neither one of us could pinpoint the one mystery seasoning ingredient.  I also ordered a dessert crepe.  It tasted fine, but I was expecting it to be rolled up with the filling inside.  Instead the filling was spread on top of the crepe tortilla/quesadilla style.  My crepe selection contained chocolate filling similar to Nutella drizzled with caramel sauce.  Greeting/ordering snafu aside, for the rest of the meal our server was very attentive, even bringing me a fresh pot of tea, when I really only needed my cup warmed up.  The meal was a bit pricey - $55 not including tip.

Gluten Free Options – advertised.  Their menu stated “any main course can be modified to be gluten free.”

Vegetarian Options – there are quite a few vegetarian options including soups, salads, pizzas, pastas, and entrees.

    I know it has been awhile since you wrote this but we just came across it! On behalf of the management of Shakespeare we really appreciate you including us in your blog and reviewing our restaurant. We continue to always improve our service standard and apologize for the slow service and unanswered questions about our menu which is unacceptable. We will ensure to rectify these issues through training! We hope you return to have more experiences with us and give us the chance to make it up to you. We hope since time has passed we have improved our standards but please come try us again and include us in your lovely blog!
