Making a one year old Happy Birthday banner

For Michael's first birthday, I wanted to be able to have his first year on display as a party decoration.  I loved the idea of having a baby picture with its corresponding month hung on streamers that The Macs had done for their little guy's first birthday.  So, I took the idea and gave it my own twist.  Here's how I made our one year old Happy Birthday banner.

I took to my Cricut Expression (learn more about the different Cricut cutting machines) and began cutting out what I needed to make the month tags with the Plantin SchoolBook Font Cartridge.  I bought scrapbook paper from Michaels in the party colors (green, blue, and yellow) to cut the two different sizes of rectangles, letters, and numbers.  Since I was working with twelve months and three different colors, I was able to rotate the colors.

I glued the small rectangle (~1.5in x 2in) in the center of the large rectangle (~3.5in x 4in) and then glued the description (newborn, 1 month, 2 month...) diagonally and centered.  The description and both rectangles were never the same color.  Since the birthday party was a Winnie the Pooh theme, I also added some Winnie the Pooh stickers.  After everything was dried, I glued each finished rectangle to a wooden clothespin.

I had purchased the Happy Birthday pennant banner for Jon's 30th birthday party a few years earlier, but had never used it.  It had exactly 12 pennants which worked out great since we had a picture from when Michael was a newborn through 11 months.

Here's what it looked like at the actual party.  I probably could have gotten a little more creative with the decoration, but money was tight and I wanted to work with stuff I already had.

If you don't have a Cricut or don't want to invest in one, you could cut the rectangles out by hand.  Instead of cutting out the letters and numbers, you could purchase font stickers that are small enough to fit on the rectangles.
