Gluten Free Apple Crisp

recipe, desert, apple crisp, gluten free,
Last weekend I wanted to bring something for our trip down to visit my dad and step-mom.  I had decided on apple crisp and had a family recipe that I've made before.  I wanted to make sure that my sister-in-law would be able to eat it since she has to eat gluten free.  I spoke with her about what I need to substitute to make this simple recipe good for her and my nephew to be able to eat it.

You'll need the following items:
  • 6 - 8 apples sliced
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 C water
For the crisp:
  • 1 1/2 C flour (to make it gluten free just use gluten free flour)
  • 3/4 C sugar
  • 1/2 C soften butter
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

You first want to clean your apples.  To learn how I cleaned the apples, you can read my post Cleaning Fruit.  After I cleaned them, I peeled and then sliced 6 large apples.  I forgot to take a picture of the next step which is adding the water to the apple slices.

You'll then add the cinnamon.

Mix the water and the cinnamon with the apple slices.

Pour the mixture into a greased baking dish.  I didn't want to have to worry about bringing a dish home and have to clean it so, I used a disposable baking dish.

Now to make the crisp.

Pour the flour into a mixing bowl.

and soften butter.  I might have melted it a little too much in the microwave.

Mix it all up until it looks like sand.

Cover the cinnamon apple slices with the crisp.  Put in the oven for 45 minutes or until nice and golden brown.

My sister-in-law loved it!  For someone who doesn't eat gluten free, I really couldn't tell that much of a difference with the flour.  You can eat it cold like we did or nice and warm with some vanilla ice cream on the side.  No matter how you eat it, you'll enjoy it.
