Don't forget about dressing up your four legged child for Halloween this year.  Yes, your doggies want to get on the candy action too!  Ok, no candy for the dogs, but they can still have fun walking with kids during trick-or-treat or help with the handing out of candy.

Here's Velvet in the pumpkin costume that I bought her from Petco.  I actually bought it a little too small.

Here's Velvet in a ghost hat.  We had moved into our house a few weeks before Halloween and I had completely forgot to shop for a costume for her.  I went on my lunch break to Kmart and this was all that I could find.

Here's nurse Velvet.  One of my mother-in-law's co-workers gave me their smock that they weren't wearing anymore so that I could have Velvet dress up as a nurse.  All I had to do was buy a stethoscope from Party City.

I bought this turtle costume from Target.  I had bought a witches costume at the same time, but can't find a picture of Velvet in it.

What kinds of costumes have your dressed your fury friend up as?

If you are interested in getting a costume for your dog, we were looking in the Costume Express catalog we got in the mail a few weeks ago and saw several outfits for dogs.  There were several dog costumes that went with family themed costumes.

Here are a few tips from Costume Express:
While pet costumes are indeed adorable, keep in mind that not every pet will do well in a costume. For some pets, costumes can even be dangerous. Here are a few tips to keep your pet safe this Halloween:

  • Ensure that the costume allows your pet to move freely.
  • Avoid anything with elastic straps that go under the chin or around the neck. If your pet can't make noise (meowing, barking, etc.), it may be because the costume is interfering with your pet’s ability to breathe.
  • Make sure the costume isn't annoying, unsafe, or will constrict the animals ability to move or hear.
  • Never leave any animal unattended in a costume!
  • If you plan on having your pet wear a costume, consider helping it get accustomed to the costume by putting it on them for a few minutes at a time over the course of several days.
  • Take a close look at your pet’s costume and make sure it does not have small, dangling or easily chewed-off pieces that your pet could choke on. Also, ill-fitting outfits can get twisted on external objects or your pet, leading to injury.
  • If your pet seems distressed, allergic or shows abnormal behavior while in the costume, consider letting him go au naturale or donning a festive bandana.

I also saw several cute costumes for dogs at our local Walmart.  I know it's pretty much a hit and miss at Walmart though.  The one here in town seems to have a different and sometimes better selection of seasonal items then the larger Walmart I do our grocery shopping at.
