Family Fun at the Jefferson County WV Fair

family fun watching tractor and truck pulls at the Jefferson County WV fair, Jefferson County WV Fair, Jefferson County West Virginia,
Yesterday we decided that we would travel through the hills and over the river into my beautiful home state of West Virginia to go to the Jefferson County Fair.  You're probably wondering why we would do that when we just went to our county fair a few weeks ago, right?

Well, this fair has history for me.  I remember coming to a few of them growing up when we would come in to visit my dad's family during the Summer.  The county fair was like vacation for my granddad, uncle, and cousins.  Being the farmers that they are, they are very much into the tractor pulls.  There were many nights at Grandma and Granddad's watching the video taken at one of the many tractor pulling events they had participated in.

Since it was a Sunday and there was some tractor pulling going on, we made the beautiful trip from Loudoun County VA to Jefferson County WV.  We thought that Michael would love watching the pull since he likes tractors and pretty much anything with wheels.

When we got there, we looked at all the antique tractors and just walked around.  Michael had no desire to look at any of the animals that were on display and was kind of disappointed when he walked into one of the buildings that had other 4H projects on display.  I think he was looking for food or something fun to do.  Because of it being the first full day of the fair, the carnival rides were not completely setup.

After walking around, we sat down and got something to eat.  We then headed down to the area where the tractor pulling was taking place.  I was not surprised to see my uncle down there working the event.  He's the official with the flag.  Two of my cousins were also helping with the event as well.

Michael was impressed with the tractor pull, but it was the truck pull that really got his attention.  They were loud and fast!  Just Michael's speed.

There was going to be drag racing after the pulling, but we decided to head on back home.  The fair is going on the rest of the week so, if you live nearby you've got plenty of time to head on over and have some fun.  Tonight my cousins will be in the tractor pulling event and it's also family night over in the carnival section.  To learn more about the fair and what all is going on this week, click here to check out their website.

  2. I’ve lived in various parts of the state and I would say it mostly depends on what you’re looking for.

If it’s rural and you want to be far away from everything, I would suggest Monroe County. It’s beautiful, truly. You won’t see wal marts or strip malls. There’s only a few incorporated towns in the whole county. It’s mountains and valleys with lots of farmland. Mostly older folks. Definitely more insular, like traditional WV where being a good neighbor is staying out of your neighbors space and minding your own.

If you want rural but it’s important to be close to something, eastern panhandle would be a good choice. It’s close to DC and Baltimore, but it’s still easy to find very rural areas that are scenic. It’s less mountainous, but there’s still the blue ridge mountains and the Shenandoah river area in Jefferson County. Lots of civil war history if you’re into that. Jefferson county is the wealthiest county so cost of living is higher, but access to fun stuff is better than most parts of the state.
