Kitchen Remodel: Phase One

It's been almost seven years since we bought our three story townhouse and we have finally started the kitchen remodel process.  We want to try and upgrade our kitchen by spending as little money as possible.  Our goal is to also try and pay this in cash as much as possible.  Therefore, this remodel will be in several phases.

This is what the kitchen looked like when we bought the house.  Love the back splash above the oven?!?  It was a big selling factor!  Just kidding, that was the first thing to go.  We did as good of a clean down as we could.  The previous owners left the kitchen covered in grease and the fridge was not much better.

A little over a year later, we received this stainless steel microwave as a Christmas gift.  It took a few more months before Jon and his dad installed it above our stove.

Many years later we bought our stainless steel dishwasher.  After a year of running our old dishwasher twice or three times a day because of cleaning baby bottles, it died.  We bought this dishwasher on sale at Best Buy and used our Best Buy credit card to get the 18 month 0% interest.  I calculated a monthly payment to have it paid off within the 18 months to avoid paying interest.

A year later we installed built-ins from Jon's parents' house in our kitchen bump-out (Making Someone Else's Used Up Furniture Something New For You) and started the painting of our kitchen.  We had bought the paint the weekend after we bought the house, but never got around to the painting of the kitchen.

Last year our garbage disposal died (Handy Hubby - Replacing a Garbage Disposal) and we replaced our leaky faucet (hopefully Jon will get around to writing a post about that).

The past couple of months our oven had been given us lots of issues.  It would say that it was preheated when it was about 100 degrees off.  I would have to wait about an extra thirty minutes just to get it to the correct temperature.  We decided that it was time to start looking for a new oven.  Jon and I went into Best Buy looking at buying an oven, but ended up buying a fridge.  We couldn't  pass up on the deal that they were having.  It was an open box stainless steel fridge at 60% off!  Yes, it was pretty dung up, but we found out that you could buy replacement doors to fix that.  We could not pass up on this awesome deal, you never know when or if you'll ever see a deal like this again.  We decided that we would use our Best Buy card to get the 18 month 0% interest.

We decided that this was the push we needed to paint the rest of the kitchen.  We also needed to do some plumbing where the fridge goes (Jon will be writing a post about that soon).  When the fridge was delivered, it was in worse condition than it was when we purchased it in the store.  We sent it back to be repaired.  A month later, it still sat in the warehouse not fixed.  The store manager decided to give us a brand new fridge for the same price of the open box!

Because of all the issues we were having with just getting our fridge, the store manager also gave us and additional $100 off the oven we wanted that was already on sale.  We've never seen the oven on sale for that price so we used the remainder of our tax refund to pay for the much needed oven.

This past weekend is when we received the fridge and oven.  With 3/4 of the kitchen painted and the new appliances, the kitchen is starting to look great.  Sad that it's taken seven years to get just this far into our kitchen remodel, but the rest of the remodel won't take as long to complete.  Stay tuned for the next phase of this remodel.

Have you done a kitchen remodel?  How long did it take you?  How did you save money with your remodel?  We ended up spending in total for all of our upgrades so far, the retail price of the fridge!

  1. Our kitchen remodel took longer and we were way over budget. We spent too much money correcting the mistakes that we had made doing the renovations. My only wish is that we had hired a professional to get it done. I guarantee it would have been done quicker and for less money!

  2. The market for home appliances is, in large part driven by kitchen appliances. With several of the world's regions in economic troubles, the category of home appliances is really being driven forward by smaller ticket sized appliances common in the kitchen.
